Media Consulta UK (MCUK) today launches the European Young Journalist Award 2009 on behalf of the European Commission Directorate General for Enlargement in co-operation with European Youth Press and Café Babel.
The pan-European competition offers journalists from the UK and across Europe the opportunity to reflect and express their views on the enlargement of the European Union. The 2009 edition of the Young Journalist Award coincides with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain and the 5th anniversary of the accession to the EU of eight Central and Eastern European Countries, as well as Malta and Cyprus.
Following the success of last year’s competition, the competition has a new category for radio journalists. The competition runs from 1st February until 31st May 2009 and participants must be aged between 17–35 and come from an EU Member Sstate or a Candidate or Potential Candidate Country (Western Balkans and Turkey). The theme of all applications for both categories must refer to the enlargement of the EU or the future vision of Europe or both.
Participants can enter the competition via the dedicated website: www.EUjournalist-award.eu. The website also provides information about the EU's enlargement policy, interesting tips on developing a career in journalism and an interactive blog.
A UK winner will be chosen by a national jury and all winning articles and radio pieces will be published on the competition website. Winners will also be invited on a cultural trip to Berlin in the second half of the year to join in the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
